David Munrow

& The Early Music Consort Of London
 "Renaissance Suite" (1974)

Originaly posted by Reynardine:
http://time-has-told-me.blogspot.jp/2009/01/renaissance-suite.html

David Munrow was perhaps the greatest exponent of early music before his untimely death in 1976. He will be familiar to folk fans from his work in the late 60s with Young Tradition, Shirley & Dolly Collins and John Renbourn.

For some reason this album seems to have never been released on CD - perhaps because it is a soundtrack to an obscure French film about bicycle racing rather than an award winning television serial. This though, really deserves re-release. Here you'll find dance tunes from Praetorius and Susato along with original compositions by David Munrow.

Tracks:
01. Triumph (Hans Hassler: Intrada VI & VII from "Lustgarden")
02. They're off (Bransle double de Poictou & Bransle gay double from Praetorius' "Terpsichore")
03. Training (David Munrow: Bagpipe solo I & Bagpipe solo II)
04. On the Road (Basse danse "Dont vient cela" from Tielmann Susato's "Dancerye")
05. Complaint ("O death rock me asleep" Anon., 16th c.)
06. In the Mountains (Bransle simple from Praetorius' "Terpsichore")
07. The six days of Grenoble (David Munrow)
08. The Dream ("Tristan's Lament" Anon., Italy, 14th c.)
09. The Race Against Oneself (David Munrow)
10. Why Suffer ("Consonanze Stravaganti" Giovanni Macque)
11. Effort (Basse galliarde from Pierre Phalèse "Premier livre de Danseries" & Galliarde from Praetorius' "Terpsichore")
12. End Music (Variations on "La folie d'Espagne", Corelli & Division flúte (1706))

The Songwainers

"The Songwainers" (1971 Argo ZFB31)

Click the picture for enlarge

Originaly posted by Reynardine:
http://time-has-told-me.blogspot.jp/2009/01/songwainers.html

This I believe was the only recording of the Songwainers from Cheltenham - but what a classic. Their setting of John Barleycorn (to the tune of We Plough The Fields And Scatter) has now entered the tradition. One of the finest harmony groups of the 60s and 70s.

Singers
Ken Langsbury: Baritone
Ron Taylor: Tenor
Dave Stephenson: Bass

Sorry the quality is not up to my usual but the songs really do make up for it.

Son of Dave Stephenson (bass singer) said at original post:

Given that Dave Stephenson was my dad - and I remember the Songwainers rehearsing in my front room (above my bedroom) - with itinerant guests like John & Beverly Martyn, Roy Harper, Maddy & Steeleye Span, Ashley Hutchings - I thank y'all for the comments. We have burned the LP to CD (if you're interested) Contact justacog@astephenson.org

I remember dad (Dave) joking that the Albion Band had nicked one of their songs - including the 'bum' notes they played at the time. Ironically, as I got older I realised that I really liked folk / folk rock. Heaven forbid I'd ever admit this to dad, tho.!

Dave Ellis

"BBC Live 1973"

Dave Ellis is an influential English folk guitarist, singer and composer whose music is extremely difficult to categorise, due to its unique diversity and combination of styles. His early instrumental influences include guitarist Bert Jansch. Ellis' first vinyl album called "Album" (1973) won strong critical praise and is regarded as a classic, but the opportunity presented by acclaimed national TV and radio appearances (on such now-legendary TV shows as The Old Grey Whistle Test) was inexplicably never seized by his record company, at a time when the solo acoustic guitarist/singer-songwriter needed all the promotion they could get, no matter how good the material or performances. As result of the lack of promotional follow-up at that time, Ellis's guitar prowess has remained one of the best kept secrets of the guitar fraternity, influencing such successful artists as Mark Knopfler.

Only four songs available but this is must for fans of his studio album.

1. Going Down Slow
2. Can You Tell Me
3. Silly Me Silly You
4. Jitterbug

Download link doesn't exit but his "Album"(1973) was my very first post:

Colin Thompson

"Three Knights" 1980

Originaly posted by FolkPhile:
http://time-has-told-me.blogspot.jp/2007/05/presented-by-folkphile-6.html

Here is a UK folk LP. Colin Thompson is very talented both as a singer and as a guitarist. The arrangements are rather unusual.

Comments from his current website:

"Karen & Colin from North Lincolnshire are continuing to gain a reputation as excellent performers. Originally a classical guitarist, Colin has combined elements of classical and traditional styles and the distinctive rhythms and decorations of Scottish pipe tunes which he has adapted for guitar. Karen has explored a range of musical genres from choral singing to punk rock.
Together they have created a refreshing sound, setting poetry to self-composed tunes, finding little known traditional ballads and performing well-known songs in an individual manner. This provides an interesting and varied repertoire of love songs, wicked tales, pirate ballads and much more, all underpinned by the couple's obvious love of their music and good-humoured banter."

More Topic vinyl rips, this time a southerly jaunt from the region of the UK previously featured in many of my posts, this time the MIDLANDS in this "Wide Midlands" album from 1971.

This has some really good examples of the industrial UK midlands dialect in both the spoken tracks and the vocals.

I was so impressed by this girl's voice, I had to do a little clean-up on the vinyl rip.

The vocals are a little back in the mix for my liking, so I have done TWO copies, one with a little extra reverb in the vocal spectrum, see what you think..
